The first ronin carved the guardian from a block of blackened wood and mounted it above a gate no map admits existed. The face was made ugly on purpose. Kind spirits invite. Gate guardians warn. Its teeth faced the street so every hungry thing moving through the city would understand that something hungrier was already watching the door.
For years, nothing crossed beneath it without permission.
Then, during a night erased from every archive, the gate was found split down the center. The street beyond it was untouched. The guardian remained in place, but one horn had been shattered close to the skull. Black rain ran from the break like blood. No body was recovered, and no witness ever described what tried to enter.
The ronin refused to repair the damage.
A perfect guardian has never been tested. A broken one has already decided what it is willing to lose.
It is said the mask still appears above unmarked doors when something dangerous is coming. Those who sleep beneath it hear two knocks before dawn: the first from whatever wants inside, the second from the guardian answering. By morning, fresh claw marks cover the outside of the door. There are never any on the inside.
The broken horn is not a wound. It is a receipt.
Wear the mark if you are the one who stands between the gate and everything worse.
